NAIROBI - Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) says it will prosecute over 50,000 voters for registering more than once during the voter registration exercise that ended in June.
IIEC chairman Isaack Hassan said the commission will compile and publish a list of shame of those who have double registered.
This he said will ensure the culprits do not vote during the August 4th referendum.
Addressing a press conference in Nairobi, Hassan said the worst cases of multiple listing were reported in Kisumu and Mombasa.
He said a voter in Kisumu Town West registered eleven times while another in Mombasa registered eight times.
He said over 186,000 names have been struck off from the voter register bringing down the number of registered voters to 12,470,433 from the previous 12,656,451 due to various anomalies.
Embakasi remains the constituency with the highest number of voters at 287,429, followed by Juja with 186,998 and Kasarani constituency with 180,886. Lamu East registered the lowest number with 8,834 voters.
Mr Hassan also said that oldest registered voter in the country is a Ms Alice Muthoni who is 119 years.
The electoral body also requested President Kibaki to declare August 4, the referendum date, a public holiday.
This he said will enable Kenyans to participate fully in the vote.
Meanwhile, a Civil Society Group has unveiled a modern system to monitor the Electoral process to improve accountability and transparency in the voter tabulation exercise in the fourth coming referendum.
The modern system will provide systematic and representative information on qualitative aspects and tabulation of results in election process and also to verify the official vote count.
Speaking in Nairobi, Mr. Peter Alingo, Electoral Lobby Group (ELOG) committee member, said that the organization will deploy 702 Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) observers who will be supported by 210 supervisors and 10,000 general observers supported by 240 general observations in the constituencies
PVT is a scientific and advanced method of collecting, transmitting and analyzing election results announced by the Electoral Management Body (EMB).
"We need to build capacity to maximize the performance and impact of domestic observation," he said, adding it will safeguard the integrity and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
